KATAHDIN AND THE NORTH WOODS: THE BEST REASON OF ALL

The Katahdin Region's quality of life and natural beauty bring a sense of pride to life second to none. Perhaps there is something in the fact that most of the area's residents have been lucky enough to spend some time along the shores of the West Branch of the Penobscot River or in Baxter State Park - to climb mile-high Mount Katahdin and take in a magnificent view of the place where they live.

The pride of Katahdin's people is evident in every part of their lives. They bring something extra to their workday - a desire to uphold a tradition of careful workmanship. The Katahdin Region's school systems are outstanding and offer many extracurricular activities for athletes, musicians, and scholars of all ages. Full health care services are provided by the Millinocket Regional Hospital and two medical centers in East Millinocket. Specialized medical care beyond this is provided by an occupational therapy and rehabilitation center in Millinocket and a nursing home.

Each town has excellent recreation opportunities. There are community swimming pools, tennis and basketball courts, softball, baseball, and soccer fields, picnic tables, boat launching ramps, and a golf course. Less than an hour's drive will provide access to the Performing Arts Center, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, professional theater companies, museums, and other cultural attractions in Orono and Bangor.

Each summer, tourists flock to the Katahdin Region for whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, swimming, and the sheer enjoyment of a mild Maine summer day. Autumn brings the brilliant hues of fall foliage, while winter marks the season for skiing, skating, ice-fishing and snowmobiling. Nearby Baxter State Park offers more than 200,000 acres of recreation. A gift of former Maine Governor Percival P. Baxter in 1931, the area is famous for its outstanding hiking, natural rock waterslides, fishing, hunting, camping, and mile-high Mt. Katahdin. In the words of Gov. Baxter himself, "Katahdin stands above the surrounding plain, unique in grandeur and glory... Throughout the ages, it will stand as an inspiration to the men and women of Maine."
