East Millinocket means East of many islands
in the language of Maine’s
Abenaki people. The town, with a population of 1,860, lies on the
northern side of the West Branch of the Penobscot River, sixty miles
north of Bangor.
During the nineteenth century the stands of pine,
spruce and other soft woods lining the banks of the Penobscot became
the raw material
for the area’s economic future. Great Northern Paper started
its paper machines in August of 1907. The 10,000 acres surrounding
the mill was incorporated as the town of East Millinocket on February
21, 1907.
Today the community promotes economic development at the
Katahdin Regional Industrial Park and through its low mil rates.
We work hard
at encouraging tourism by promoting the rivers, lakes, streams,
and nearby Baxter State Park: the most beautiful site in Maine.
East
Millinocket is an ideal base for visitors taking advantage of the
local white water rafting, fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, and
snowmobiling.
The town is governed by a five-member board of Selectman,
which meets weekly. Citizens and local businesses are encouraged
to attend
these
town meetings. East Millinocket provides fire and ambulance protection,
a police department, a recreation department that reaches out
to all ages, and a public works department, willing to go above
and
beyond the call of duty. Our public library is open five days
a week. And our water and wastewater department has some of the
lowest
rates
in the state.
East Millinocket provides a wonderful education for its citizens,
from preschoolers to seniors. Our schools include Opal Myrick Grammar
School, Schenck High School, and the Katahdin Region Higher Education
Center, for college students.
Millinocket Regional
Hospital, a full service health care facility with several specialized
physicians, is located
within 10 miles
of East Millinocket. In addition, three local doctors and
a dentist serve our community.
